PhD in Computational Imaging
The University of Heidelberg invites applications for a PhD position in computational imaging.
The goal of the thesis is the development of a novel light-field camera, similar to existing
plenoptic cameras with microlenses, but by coded imaging.
Prospective candidates have a master or diploma degree in Electrical Engineering, Physics or Computer Science.
Besides a strong mathematical background and good knowledge of wave and Fourier optics, we require fluency in
advanced C++ and matlab programming as well as in English and good communications skills.
The positions will be affiliated with the Heidelberg Collaboratory for Image Processing (HCI).
The HCI is part of the Interdisciplinary Center for Scientific Computing (IWR) and comprises
five research groups (Garbe, Hamprecht, Jaehne, Ommer, Schnoerr). The position is funded by
Sony Deutschland GmbH, one of the six industrial HCI partners of HCI.
The Stuttgart Technology Center (STC) of Sony Deutschland GmbH has about 200 employees.
Thirtyfive engineers work in the field of image processing. One research focus is computational cameras.
The gross salary ranges from 39.8 to 46.6 kEUR (TVL/13 step 1 up to step 3) plus social benefits,
depending on qualification and experience. The starting date should be no later than July 2012.

PhD in data analysis
Two scholarships are available for excellent students from Nankai
and Tsinghua University to study towards their PhD at the University
of Heidelberg. The students will work in the group for Multidimensional
Image Processing. You can choose from a range of topics in
- Data mining of mass spectrometric data in proteomics
- State-space modeling of single molecule spectroscopic data
- Image processing for microscopy in systems biology
- Novel algorithms for inference on spectral images

A 4D light field describes the radiometric properties of light within space. Additionally
we are interested to vary the non-local 2D illumination field. Aim of this thesis
is to build and test a setup which allows for acquiring such 6D reflectance fields
using movable cameras and light sources.The system will be tested using both toy
examples and industry-relevant objects.

zur Untersuchung der kleinskaligen, windinduzierten Turbulenz an der Meeresoberfläche.

Eiskernstudien bieten eine der erfolgreichsten Methoden in der modernen Klimaforschung,
wobei auch die mit der Tiefe sich ändernden physikalischen Eigenschaften

New Ground Truth for Motion Estimation
Up to now, so-called optical flow algorithms have not been tested thoroughly enough
on relevant real-world data. The reason lies in the fact that it can be extremely
costly and time-consuming to create such data with real physical setups. To alleviate
