Third International Symposium on Air-W ater Gas Transfer

University of Heidelberg
Heidelberg, Germany
July 24-27, 1995

The research group Image Processing organized the Third International Symposium on Air-Water Gas Transfer that took place from July 24 to 27, 1995 at the University of Heidelberg in Germany.

It was chaired by B. Jähne with E. C. Monahan as co-chair and K. O. Münnich as local chair.

The symposium focused on a deeper understanding of gas transfer in natural systems, air-sea gas transfer and reaeration of rivers and lakes. The basic conference themes were:
  • Physical and Chemical Mechanisms
  • Waves and Turbulences
  • Breaking Waves and Bubbles
  • Measuring Technology; Reaeration
  • Laboratory Measurements
  • Field Measurements
  • Remote Sensing and Global Modelling

The symposium was a great success with about 120 participants; about half of them came from the United States. The symposium received funding from the Office of Naval Research (US), the Department of Energy (US), the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the International Association for the Physical Sciences of the Oceans (IAPSO), the German Science Foundation (DFG), the State of Baden Württemberg, University of Heidelberg, and the Connecticut Sea Grant College.

A selection of 80 papers from the symposium were published in December 1995 under the title Air-Water Gas Transfer with B. Jähne and E. C. Monahan as editors by AEON, Hanau, ISBN 3-9804429-0-X. The work is also available on CD (ISBN 3-9804429-1-8). AEON can be contacted at https://www.aeon.de/de/
