The interdisciplinary project studied formal aspects of artworks, such as shape, colour and transformations between objects; eventually, the web interface for visual search allowed a semantic evaluation of image collections. Algorithms, which were developed by the group, thus enabled a thorough analysis of art image collections, including formal and semantic analysis. In that computational methods are beneficial for art historical research and resemble previous popular approaches of the discipline. In 1939, art historian Erwin Panofsky (1892-1968) introduced his studies in iconography, differentiating between pre-iconographic analysis, iconographic analysis and iconology, the study of iconography is dedicated to the interpretation of the content, subject matter or composition. .
